Bad Yelp Review Results in Lawsuit

The story of a contractor who sued his client for $750,000 over a negative Yelp review got tons of attention from TV, Internet and newspapers in December 2012.

Jane Perez is being sued by her contractor, C. Dietz for $750,000 in defamation charges after posting negative reviews of his company’s work  on the popular online review sites Yelp and Angie’s List (ABC News). Both sides have their own story, however the negative reviews posted by Perez are no-longer on Yelp or other sites, the judge has also ordered Perez to not post any online reviews about Dietz.

The case has ran its course however it has caused quite a significant loss of business for Dietz. The contractor lost lots of new potential client while the reviews were up, however when people found out about the lawsuit they didn’t even try to understand who was right and who was wrong, they simply looked down at Dietz, claiming he sued his customer for “Freedom of speech”  – which caused more losses of business.

If you own a business, you probably have seen bad things written about you or others online. Unfortunately most negative reviews are extremely exaggerated and could have been avoided if the customer simply talked to you about their negative experience, you would have fixed it, wouldn’t you? Now, are you going to file a lawsuit against every misleading negative review? Probably not… and while those bad reviews are out there, you are losing money.
